This is a repost of an article by Nathaniel Berman that originally appeared in Money, Inc., 10 Things You Didn’t Know about Rob Vandenberg, in April 2018.
Rob Vandenberg is the current president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lingotek, which was founded in 2006. Lingotek, based in Lehi, Utah, is a cloud-based translation technology and services provider. Cloud-based means their applications, services, and resources are available to users on demand through the Internet using a cloud computing provider’s servers. Utilizing cloud-based computing increases capacity, enhances functionality, and adds additional services without adding expensive infrastructure and/or training and increased staff cost.
The Translation Network is the leader in collaborative translation technology, offering translation management software as well as professional linguistic services, and that is in part due to Vandenberg’s contributions to the company. Since the CEO is not very well known to the public, here are 10 things you didn’t know about Rob Vandenberg.
1. CEO for almost 10 Years
Vandenberg became the CEO and president of Lingotek almost ten years ago in August of 2008. He is said to be the driving force of the company’s vision, changing what will become translation’s future. Before being named as such, Vandenberg served as the sales and marketing vice-president, where he guided and inspired others for almost a year and a half.
2. CEO and Founder of LocalVoice
In November 1998, Vandenberg not only researched, but he also funded and launched his own cloud-based software company called LocalVoice. LocalVoice provided membership organizations with integrated web-based relationship management solutions. The unified platform included online marketing services, e-commerce, online communities, content management, and member management. LocalVoice quickly became a leading provider of hosted software applications specializing in both the relationship management needs and the specialized websites of associations and membership organizations. LocalVoice was then attained by HarrisConnect and Vandenberg stayed on as the sales and marketing vice-president for almost two years before going to Lingotek.
3. One of the First 20 INTERSHOP Employees
Prior to LocalVoice, which subsequently led to HarrisConnect, Vandenberg began as one of the twenty original employees of INTERSHOP Communications. As National Sales Manager, he aided in building the company’s worldwide clientele as one of the company’s top sales executives. INTERSHOP now has as many as fourteen hundred employees worldwide. Their initial public offering, or IPO, was one of US history’s most successful for a software company, boasting a huge ten billion dollar market cap.
4. Student at UC Berkeley
Vandenberg attended the University of California at Berkeley from 1989 through 1993, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in political economics. Prior to attending UC Berkeley, Vandenberg attended high school at The Cate School, located in Carpinteria, California. The Cate School is a co-educational boarding/day school which offers four-year college preparatory programs.
5. Lacrosse Player
Vandenberg was an avid lacrosse player. He played both in high school, at The Cate School, and later in college, at UC Berkeley. In addition, in his younger years, he was also into BMX and motorcycles. Vandenberg is still an active person, involving himself in outdoor activities whenever possible, including his stints as volunteer coach.
6. Volunteer Experience
Vandenberg has had done his share of volunteering and continues to do so to this day. He was a volunteer fundraiser for the YMCA of San Francisco for five years, from January 1995 through January 2000. He co-led various fundraising teams for Capital Campaigns which solicited both individual and corporate contributions for the program.
Since January 2010, he has been a volunteer youth soccer, basketball, and lacrosse coach for the Basin Recreation District Park in Utah. Vandenberg coaches what he says are awesome kids, helping them to develop their natural athletic abilities, learn new sports, and be part of a team.
Vandenberg also volunteers for The Road Home and has since December 2011. Ongoing coordination of volunteer efforts on his behalf and those of other Lingotek employees help The Road Home in order to manage physical goods donations. These efforts are especially beneficial during the holiday season and special events.
Vandenberg may not be where he is today had it not been for those who influenced him, his ideologies, and work ethic. Some of those influencers are Bill Gates, former CEO at Microsoft and co-chair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Satya Nadella, current CEO at Microsoft; Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA Dallas Mavericks; Richard Branson, Founder at Virgin Group; and Jeff Weiner, CEO at LinkedIn.
Vandenberg is an avid writer and has had many of his articles, papers, and blogs published. To date, he’s had forty-eight publications, many of which have been published in popular magazines and websites. His articles are mostly technical in nature. However, he’s written about everything from SEO optimization to what his company specializes in, translation. He clearly enjoys his work.
Vandenberg is a translator in his own sense. Not only does he speak English, but he also speaks two additional languages, Dutch and Spanish. One would assume to work for a company specializing in translation, it would be optimal to be able to speak more than one language. Furthermore, Spanish is a great choice considering how many Spanish-speaking citizens the US now has.
In addition to being an all-around winner, Vandenberg has also won a couple of honors as well. He was ranked as the sixteenth best CEO in a small to mid-size company by USA Today in November 2017. In addition, in February 2009, he was voted by Utah Business as one of the Forty Under 40, a program that puts a spotlight on up-and-coming professional in Utah. It seems they definitely got it right when they awarded this honor to Vandenberg, who is now president and CEO of Lingotek.
