How Lingotek Uses AI to Agilize Translation Workflows

This is the first in a series of AI blogs on how Lingotek is using artificial intelligence to streamline and automate translation for our customers. From workflows and machine learning to vendor management and quality feedback, Lingotek is using the latest in AI technology to agilize translation management, reduce manual processes, and streamline efficiency.

In November 2017, Common Sense Advisory (CSA) published an article, “Time for Commercial Software Vendors to Embrace Content and Agilize Workflows,” encouraging commercial software vendors to take steps toward “agilizing workflow.” We want the folks at CSA to know that Lingotek is already there.

Lingotek has been using next-generation technology and AI with machine learning to detect the time, quality, and resource requirements needed for each content type. Automated, agilized workflows are able to determine which combination of machine and human resources is best to optimize quality and accuracy, reduce time-to-market with faster delivery, and to maintain a consistent brand voice, all while respecting customer cost requirements.

CSA recognizes that enterprises that use several content management systems (CMS) and language services providers (LSPs) need agile tools to automate processes and Lingotek is one of the few software vendors to take this on.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is simply technology that learns. AI uses data and experience to perform tasks that would otherwise require human intelligence and effort.

How Does Lingotek Use AI to Agilize Translation Workflows?

Lingotek calls CSA’s agilized workflows "intelligent workflows" and they include phase automation, dynamic scheduling, and active monitoring. Lingotek has created a workflow prediction engine that can predict the appropriate workflow for newly imported content.
The algorithm gathers metadata such as due date, department, word count, content type, author, etc. and then makes a prediction using its machine learning to automatically create the optimal workflow. It will take into consideration which LSPs are available, content value, the translation levels--standard MT,  MT + post edit, or professional--based on content type. Active monitoring identifies which steps can be added (or skipped) to meet the desired deadlines.

Lingotek + Nike: Real-World Use of Intelligent Workflows

NIKE was looking for a localization technology partner with an agile solution that could keep up with the volume and pace of its dynamic content delivery. Retail sales and advertising are very time sensitive, so Nike uses Lingotek’s intelligent workflows to automate the creation and number of steps for each job request. Phase automation intelligently builds the appropriate workflow to meet the project due date, without sacrificing quality. Active monitoring uses AI-like business rules to recognize how much content needs to be translated and to adjust workflows as needed to meet necessary deadlines. It can skip steps to ensure faster delivery, or add steps if the project is ahead of schedule. Dynamic scheduling calculates due dates for each phase of the workflow, based on the time available to complete each step in the workflow; and automatically assigns the appropriate teams and/or individuals based on content type and language.

This type of AI enables more efficient project management, because the software identifies and builds the best workflow based on specific criteria without the need for human interaction. Without AI, workflows require project managers and customers to provide domain knowledge manually to construct and curate every possible outcome.

Will AI Replace Localization Project Managers?

No. What it will do is reduce the need for project managers to perform routine, automated tasks. Instead, they can use that time for solving problems that AI can’t solve. When you implement better process automation, that leaves time for project managers to perform tasks that are more valuable to the organization, such as problem solving and responding to urgent issues. They can focus their time on exception management, something that AI will not be able to do for a long while yet.
